Laughing gas or happy gas is the popular name given to the Nitrous Oxide gas. This is the effect it has on people who inhale it. It sedates them leaving them dreamy and out of it and this will be characterized by hysterical giggles. The Nitrous Oxide gas has N2O as its chemical formula and it is characterized by an odor and taste that is a bit sweet. It is non flammable and colorless when at room temperature. The Second World War gave birth to its use and it was used with aircrafts to enhance their systems. It made the war planes accelerate over the enemy territories in an effort to increase their attack chances. It also kept the planes running for longer. This was applied in low oxygen atmospheres especially in high altitudes.
Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) are widely used due to their affordability, their ease of installation and their simple design. They boost a vehicles horsepower instantly and this makes them popular. They are presently used in the motor vehicle industry for race cars as they have the power to enhance an engine’s performance. They act as oxidizers when subjected to high temperatures. They allow for super performances by adding power to the engine. The first racing cars to use the Nitrous Oxide Systems technology were the NASCAR cars in 1970s. Their use later spread to underground cars which were later banned.
Nitrous Oxide enhances performance in vehicles by supporting the combustion process. This boosts the engine power. For combustion to take place, oxygen has to be present. Fuel in the same way requires oxygen to burn and it is by burning that it heats up to produce energy that will in turn run the engine. Pure oxygen is too strong to be introduced to an engine on its own as it risks explosions. This is because it is supercharged and this can cause the engine to explode. That is why it is mixed with fuel and introduced to the engine as a cocktail and this runs a car at normal speeds. To achieve super speeds, Nitrogen Oxide is added into the cocktail and the result is the formation of two gases; Oxygen and Nitrogen. This Oxygen is in its pure state and this powers the car highly sending it racing at very high speeds.
Nitrogen is the residue left after the formation of pure Oxygen. It is an inert gas and this does not allow for any reaction with any atom. Its purpose is to control the heat produced by the pure Oxygen. It produces a cooling effect that lowers the heat. The Nitrous Oxide Systems that are commonly used include Nitrous Oxide Wet Injections and Nitrous Oxide Dry injections. The Dry Injection uses Nitrous Oxide only. It is used to dry off the fuel and the result is a less powered engine. The Wet Injection is a cocktail of Nitrous Oxide and fuel and this results into a high powered engine. One limitation of Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) is that the engine is stressed due to the cylinder pressure which is now increased. This in turn destroys the crankshafts and pistons.
